FAITHFUL DOG HACHIKO
Translation by Mrs. Keiko Zeilinger
Hachiko was born on November 10, 1923 in Odate, Akita Prefecture. Hachiko died on March 8, 1935.
From 1924 on, Hachiko lived in Shibuya in Tokyo with his owner, Hidesaburo Ueno, a professor at the agricultural department of the University of Tokyo. Everyday, the dog accompanied the professor to Shibuya Station and returned in the evening in order to take his master home.
After the death of Professor Ueno on May 21, 1925 day after day Hachiko waited for his master vainly. One day an article about Hachiko was published in Asahi newspaper, featuring this faithful dog. Many people were impressed, and they gave him the name „Faithful Dog Hachiko“.
Hachiko died on March 8, 1935 in a street in Shibuya. He was stuffed in the agricultural department of the University of Tokyo and is kept at the National Science Museum of Japan.
A bronze statue of Hachiko at Sibuya Station is a popular meeting spot. An entrance of the station is called „Hachiko Exit“.
The famous bronze statue was erected on April 21, 1934 at Shibuya Station - because someone had begun to sell postcards of Hachiko - and Hachiko himself was present at its unveiling. The statue was created by Takeshi Ando. During World War II. the statue was confiscated for the production of weapons. The present statue at Shibuya Statiob was created by a son of Ando and was erected in 1948.
In 1987 a film was produced with the title „Hachiko Monogatari“ (The story of Hachiko). In 2008 Richard Gere played in the remake „Hachiko: A Dog’s Story“ as the dog’s master. On July 7, 2009 R. Gere visited the Hachiko Statue at Shibuya and said: „Finally I can see the true Hachiko. Today I’m very happy and honored.“
Many Japanese like the melancholic story of this faithful dog Hachiko. One of the Japanese virtues is „ON“ (gratefulness to one another, who gives goodness). Once a story of Hachiko was in a textbook of the elementary school: the children must not forget the „ON“. Some begrudging people said that Hachiko came to the station only because the people fed him. But the Japanese don’t care about Hachiko’s motivation why he waited for his master at Sibuya Station day after day. The main issue is Hachiko’s faithfulness. The Japanese equate a faithful dog with faithful Hachiko. Nevertherless, many jung people who are waiting at the Hachiko statue aren’t thinking about Hachiko. The statue is very famous and loved of all, and one cannot miss it...

Long-hair heredity with Akitas
In January 2005, I put the following questions to Jitaro Nakagawa, Japan, owing to breeding inquiries concerning my males DAIRYU and SEIOU which are not carriers of the long-hair gene.
Here are the answers given by Mr Nakagawa.
Question1: Is long hair heritable with Akitas ?
Answer: Yes, I think long hair is heritable because time and time again it occurs that a bitch which already once gave birth to long-hair puppies will give birth to a long-hair puppy again..
Question 2: Is it possible that the male as well as the female are carriers of the long-hair gene and transmit the long hair?
Answer: Yes.
Question 3: Must both parent dogs be carriers of the long-hair gene in order to procreate long-hair puppies?
Answer: No, it is sufficient that one of the parents has the long-hair gene to procreate long-hair puppies.
Question 4: What should I pay attention to when mating my males with other bitches in order to get puppies with no long hair?
Answer: Better avoid that the males DAIRYU and SEIOU cover bitches that have already given birth to long-hair puppies.
Question 5: How is it possible to prevent the birth of long-hair puppies?
Answer: If you avoid mating dogs that are carriers of the long-hair gene no long-hair puppies can be born.
However, it is not possible to say that no long-hair puppy will be born because no long-hair has been born so far.
Comment:
A dog’s predisposition concerning the length of its hair can be made visible by molecular genetic detection. For this, the hereditary molecule (DNA) is isolated from a blood sample, and by means of the polymerase chain reaction the gene for hair length is multiplied.
Then the gene variant is made visible by a sequencer.
Heredity
Short hair (S) is transmitted dominant over long hair (L).
An allele for long hair appears only if the factor for long hair is transmitted to the puppy from the male as well as from the female (LL).
This means that the predisposition for long hair is transmitted recessive (suppressed).
It is possible that a dog that has short hair but bears the gene for long hair in his DNA (a carrier of predisposition SL) transmits his hereditary disposition to his offspring with a probability of 50 %.
When mating two carriers SL, therefore there is a possibility that 25 % of the offspring will have long hair.
By a DNA test it is possible to distinguish reliably carriers SL from homozygously short haired dogs (SS).
Thus one can avoid litters with long haired Akita puppies without totally excluding the parent dogs from breeding.
